John’s Story: A Father’s Experience of Addiction

In this episode of the Family Addiction Support Podcast, John from Co. Meath shares his experience as a father supporting his son through drug misuse and addiction.

John speaks honestly about the impact his son’s addiction had on him as a parent, including the worry, fear, frustration and emotional strain that can come with watching someone you love struggle. He reflects on the challenges of trying to support his sons while also recognising the importance of looking after his own wellbeing.

John also shares what he has learned through his own experience and the ways he has developed to cope, manage difficult situations and respond differently to the challenges addiction can bring to family life.

Having engaged with FASN for support, John’s story highlights an important message for parents and other family members: supporting someone with addiction does not mean losing yourself in the process. Finding support, understanding what you can and cannot control, and learning healthier ways to cope can make a significant difference.
