Christine’s Story: Breaking the Cycle and Finding Ways to Cope

Christine from Co. Meath joins the Family Addiction Support Podcast to share a powerful and honest story of her experiences of addiction across different stages of her life.

Christine reflects on her own childhood, growing up in a home affected by alcohol misuse and the lasting impact those early experiences had on her. She discusses how alcohol dependence later became part of her adult relationships and how these experiences shaped her life and relationships.

Christine also talks about her son’s struggles with dyspraxia and the challenges she has faced as a mother supporting him, before going on to speak about his later struggles with drug misuse and addiction. She shares the emotional impact of wanting to support and protect her son while navigating the worry, uncertainty and challenges that addiction can bring to family life.

Having engaged with FASN for support, Christine speaks about learning to cope with the challenges she faces, recognising what is within her control, setting boundaries and understanding the importance of looking after her own wellbeing while supporting someone she loves.
